Pet documents for the UK

What documents may be needed?

The set of required documents depends on where you are travelling from, your destination, and your pet’s status at the time of travel.

For some routes, a basic set of documents is sufficient, while others may require additional certificates, proof of vaccination, antibody titres, or specific documents for leaving the United Kingdom.

Most issues arise not due to missing documents, but because of incorrect preparation order or expired timeframes.

List of documents

Microchip

A microchip is a basic requirement for pet identification. It must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, and its number is used across all related documents.

What is important:

  • microchipping must be done before vaccination

  • the microchip number must match in all documents

  • any error in the number may cause problems at the border

Rabies vaccination

One of the key requirements for international pet transportation. The vaccination must be valid at the time of travel.

What is important:

  • the vaccination must be administered after microchipping

  • required waiting periods after vaccination must be observed

  • an expired vaccination may make travel impossible

Antibody titres (rabies antibody test)

Antibody titres confirm that the pet has a sufficient level of rabies antibodies after vaccination. They are critically important for certain routes.

What is important:

  • the test is carried out after vaccination

  • required timelines before travel must be followed

  • titres are especially important for some routes from Ukraine or outside the EU

Veterinary passport

The passport contains key information about the pet: owner details, microchip number, vaccinations, and veterinary records.

What is important:

  • the passport alone is not always sufficient

  • not only the document itself matters, but also the accuracy of the information entered

  • for different routes, the type of passport may also be important

Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

This is a document that is often required for travel from the United Kingdom to Europe. It is issued before the trip by a veterinarian.

What is important:

  • it is issued before departure

  • it is used for travel from the UK

  • without it, travel may not be possible

Veterinary certificate

For some routes, a separate health certificate is required to confirm that the pet meets the entry requirements of the destination country.

What is important:

  • it is issued before travel

  • it has a limited validity period

  • it is not required in all cases, but is often critical

Parasite treatment

For dogs, tapeworm treatment may be mandatory before entering the United Kingdom and must be administered within a specific timeframe before travel.

What is important:

  • this requirement mainly applies to dogs

  • the exact timing must be followed

  • the treatment must be properly recorded in the documents

Which documents are usually required in different situations

  • microchip

  • rabies vaccination

  • antibody titres (if required for the route)

  • passport

  • veterinary certificate

  • parasite treatment for dogs

Even if the documents are in place, a mistake in the details can affect border crossing.

Most common document-related mistakes

  • vaccination done before microchipping

  • expired vaccination

  • incorrect microchip number in the documents

  • wrong type of certificate selected

  • required timelines before travel not followed

  • assuming that a passport alone is sufficient
