2 min read

From 22 April 2026, new EU rules have come into force affecting how UK (Great Britain) residents travel to Europe with pets.

👉 The key point:travel is still possible — but the rules have become stricter and more document-focused.

If you are planning a trip with your pet from the UK to the EU, these updates are critical to understand.

⚠️ What has changed

❌ EU pet passports are no longer valid for GB residents

This is the biggest change.

👉 From now on:

  • EU pet passports cannot be used by UK residents for travel into the EU

  • even if you already have one — it may no longer be valid

✔ Who can still use EU passports:

  • people who live permanently in the EU

📄 AHC is now the main document

👉 If you are travelling from the UK to the EU:

You must get an Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

Key points about AHC:

  • issued by a vet in the UK

  • required for every trip from the UK

  • single-use for entry into the EU

👉 BUT (important update):

✔ now valid for:

  • up to 6 months inside the EU

  • return back to the UK

(as long as rabies vaccination is valid)

🚗 New rule: pet limit per vehicle

👉 New restriction:

  • maximum 5 pets per private vehicle

  • not per person anymore

✔ Exception:

  • competitions / events (with proof)

👤 Travelling without the owner

If your pet travels without you:

👉 new strict rules:

  • pet must travel within 5 days of the owner

  • written permission is required

  • document must travel with the pet

🌍 Different countries = different rules

👉 Important:

Each EU country may have additional requirements

✔ Always check:

  • destination country rules

  • specific entry conditions

🔁 What has NOT changed

Good news 👇

👉 Rules for returning to the UK remain mostly the same:

  • valid rabies vaccination

  • correct documents

  • approved routes

✔ EU passports can still be used for:👉 returning to the UK

❗ What this means in practice

👉 Before:

  • many used EU passports repeatedly

👉 Now:

  • you need a new AHC for each trip

  • documents matter even more

  • mistakes = higher risk of refusal

🔴 Common risks after new rules

  • using an old EU passport

  • not getting AHC

  • misunderstanding validity periods

  • travelling without proper authorization

💡 Practical conclusion

👉 Travel is still possible👉 But preparation must be more precise

The system has shifted from:“simple passport travel” → to document-controlled travel

🚀 What you should do before travelling

✔ check your documents✔ confirm your route✔ get AHC in advance✔ verify country-specific rules
